Mura e porte delle città romane in Piemonte

Mura e porte urbiche costituiscono un importante elemento del paesaggio urbano nel mondo romano, poiché definiscono la città in quanto tale. In Piemonte e Valle d’Aosta, in particolare, sono strumento principe di romanizzazione, in quanto simboli dell’urbs, una formula abitativa sconosciuta ai popoli indigeni che vivevano in villaggi e abitazioni sparse. In molti centri abitati le mura furono edificate piuttosto tardi, dopo la fondazione con valore di decoro civico, oppure furono edificate solo porte urbiche, mentre in altri casi le mura furono utilizzate e restaurate sino alle soglie dell’età moderna.

In Piedmont and Aosta Valley, in particular, they are one of the main symbols of the urbs, a way of living unknown to indigenous people who used to live in villages and scattered houses. In many cities, walls and gates were built later than the foundation, as a symbol of civic decorum, or only gates were built, while in other cases the walls and gates were used and restored till the modern era.
