Wall and gates of the Roman cities in Piedmont
- Walls and gates are
important features in the Roman urban landscape, since they define the town
itself. In Piedmont and Aosta Valley, in particular, they are one of the main
symbols of the urbs, a way of living unknown to indigenous people who used to
live in villages and scattered houses. In many cities, walls and gates were
built later than the foundation, as a symbol of civic decorum, or only gates
were built, while in other cases the walls and gates were used and restored till
the modern era. |
