Vercelli: graffiti medievali dal portale della basilica di S. Andrea e dal sarcofago di S. Paolo

Silvano Beltrame, Giovanni Sommo, Federica Tagliaue, Paola Vercellino

Vercelli: medieval graffiti from the main door of the basilica of S. Andrea and from the sarcophagus of S. Paolo - This article concerns two groups of medieval graffiti works, which can be seen in Vercelli on the stone structure of the main door of the Basilica of S. Andrea and on the side which has no decoration of the sarcophagus of S. Paolo.
An analysis of these decorative elements, which date back to the period between XIII and XV century, has been carried out by comparing them to the decoration of piemontese pottery, in particular that of the central-north, of the same age.
The presence of numerous coats of arms and the representation of a castle show the different characteristics of the iconography of Vercelli, in comparison to other well-known and examined examples of the Asti countryside.
